A tricount is a shared list of transactions which lets you and your friends balance your joint expenditure, such as during a shared activity, on a holiday or in a house share.
Everyone enters his/her expenses, Tricount calculates the balance of each participant and proposes the best way to settle up between group members.
The method with which people pay back their friends happens in a sort of triangular manner. For example, if John owes Katie 10 euros and Katie owes Fred 10 euros, then John can pay Fred directly, and everyone is even. Tricount combines the words triangular account.
Collaborative: Any participant can add their own expenses and sync with the group to view the latest uploads!
Multi-platforms: Accessible through an app.
Simple & complex expenses: Splitting bills unevenly is easy to do! Because expenses don't always concern everyone.
Perfect precision: unless rounding up comes in the way, because some expenses can't be divided perfectly (eg 100/3 will lead to 33,33 + 33,33 + 33,34).
Synchronization on our servers: which serves as a backup of your data - quite handy if you lose your phone!
Bonus: Tricount is SUPER simple, because our priority is for you to instantly feel in control!
Yes, Tricount is a free tool with no limit whatsoever.
No, the only thing you need in order to use a tricount is the access link to it (usually sent by email).
The only reason tricount asks "who you are" in a group is to calculate your total & ease the input of new expenses.
50 people (including "me") per tricount. Unlimited number of tricounts in the app.
Tricount version 3.7 allows you to create a tricount in one currency and then add expenses in other currencies if needed.
When you create the tricount, the currency you select is the default currency. The reimbursement suggestions and the balance are displayed in the default currency. Inside the tricount, when you create a transaction, you can now select a different currency.
The amount is converted according to the market rate and this rate is updated automatically on a daily basis. You can as well manually edit the rate for a currency at any time. In that case, you can decide whether or not to use it for future expenses. This setting will not impact the expenses that other participants add to the tricount.
You need the 3.7 version to access a tricount containing multiple currencies.
You add a reimbursement like a new expense, but you have to switch it to a "money transfer". You can also mark a reimbursement suggested by the app as "paid" directly in the Balances screen.
Yes, just click on the "advanced" link, and then increase the participants share either by clicking on their name, or by manually editing the share or the amount.
Example: 3 housemates use Tricount to split a $1.050 rent: Alex pays $400, Bryan $350 and Julia $300
When adding that expense, you can use these numbers as shares or as individual amounts.
Split shares unevenly (as described above in the question "Can I split an expense unevenly?"), by specifying shares for each participant.
Don't think of it as percents but rather as shares. For instance, if an adult equals 2, a child equals one. If 2 couples go on holiday together and one has a child → that couple equals 5 shares for each expense, the other has a share of 4.
By default, expenses are shared by everyone. Just unselect person by clicking his name
Tricount has 1 cent accuracy (0.01). You could therefore expect a 1 cent difference if you for instance split 100$ evenly by 3 (one user will have to have a 33.34$ share while the others will have 33,33$).
Note: if you add another 100$ expense and divide with the 3 same persons, the global error will remain 1 cent. In certain extreme cases (high number of participants, very low expenses), the roundings of numbers could lead to 2 - perhaps 3 cents difference.
There are 2 totals: "my total" sums up all expenses that impact you, while "Expenses total" sums up the group's expenses.
Note that reimbursements aren't part of those totals (in the list, reimbursements are grey instead of blue on your mobile application).
The Tricount app tots up everything that you have paid for the group. In parallel, for other transactions involving you, it adds up to what you owe to the group. Your balance is the difference between these two amounts.
Tricount offers reimbursement solutions that settle balances as easily as possible.
It’s not unusual for Tricount to ask you to pay back someone who has never paid anything for you. To understand why, let’s review how Tricount works.
Tricount handles reimbursements in two steps:
The solution Tricount offers is optimal in the sense that it limits the number of transactions to the bare minimum.
The example here below illustrates Tricount’s principle.
Example:
Imagine a tricount with three people: A, B and C.
We see that A has not paid C for anything.
As explained here above, Tricount will first calculate each person’s balance:
Tricount will then figure out how to split the balances.
Since B is already sorted, C just needs to pay $10 to A, which is what Tricount suggests even though A has not paid C for anything.
If the app suggests a reimbursement that seems illogical (because you don’t know yet how it works), remember that Tricount allows you to settle your accounts within a group rather than a specific person.
Add new participants directly while creating your tricount. However if you want to add or delete somebody after, it's also possible! On your mobile, just click at your tricount title (on the page with expenses), which will allow you to edit all the information about tricount, including participants.
Don't forget to share your tricount with the new participants, so they can add their own expenses.
On mobile app, a long click (2 seconds) on the item you wish to delete will trigger the "delete" function. On Android (v2.0 onwards), you can even delete more than one at a time.
In your tricount's list of transactions, click on the menu and select "Sort by". Then choose how you wish to sort your expenses (by title, amount, date or payer). This function is only available in the mobile app.
"Personal mode" allows you to view the details used by Tricount to calculate your balance. It also enables you to display only the expenses in which you are involved.
In order to display your expenses only (what you have paid or what others have paid for you), just click on the menu in the list of transactions, select "Personal mode" and then on "Show my expenses only".
To remove a participant, click on the tricount's title on the screen listing the expenses. On the tricount configuration screen, identify the list of participants and click on the small "x" next to the name to be deleted. N.B.: this will only work if the participant is not involved in any of the transactions.
The app asks you to identify yourself the first time you become part of a tricount. By default, the participant that you select will then be proposed to you as the payer each time you add an expense. The Total Expenses displayed at the foot of the transaction list will also relate to this person. To change "who you are" in a tricount, simply click on the tricount's title in the list of expenses and then on "I am..." on the tricount's configuration screen.
It may happen that users have many tricounts in their list. Some of which are active, some of which are completed. Instead of deleting a completed tricount, the archive feature allows to keep the list of tricounts clean and efficient while still having access to completed tricounts. Such tricounts can then be restored whenever needed.
The archive feature is available for logged in users and push notifications are disabled for such tricounts.
To archive a tricount, tap and hold on the desired tricount for 2 seconds. A menu then appears. Once archived, the tricount is moved to a list with "archived tricounts". They can be accessed via a dedicated item on the main tricount list.
To restore, open the "archived tricount" list and tap on the desired tricount. Once restored, the tricount is reimported in the main tricount list.
If you are signed in, the list of your tricounts is securely linked to your email address. It allows you to restore the data on any mobile device. The restored data will be the one that has been synchronized with our server. If you were working offline when losing or breaking your smartphone, your data may be lost., We strongly advise you to sign in and synchronise as often as you can.
Tricount asks for your permission to send you push notifications in order to alert you when other participants add, edit or delete expenses in your tricounts.
Yes, as of version 3.0, Tricount offers a login functionality. Basically, it enables you to link the tricount list on your smartphone to your email address. This functionality is only available on the mobile app. For a faster sign-in process, connect with Facebook or Google.
Since version 4.3 of Tricount, bank transfer (remittance) is proposed in some countries as a way to balance your tricounts. In these countries, it is possible to enter your International Bank Account Number (IBAN) in the "My settings" screen once logged in.
Your bank account number is revealed to the people who owe you money. For security reasons your IBAN is only shown in tricounts that are in your list. To ensure transparency, please note that your name and email address will always be communicated together with your IBAN.
Being logged in to Tricount has many benefits. Firstly, it allows you to be notified when participants add, edit or delete expenses in one of your tricounts. Secondly, by linking the app to your profile, you have always access to your tricounts, even if you lose or damage your smartphone. It is also very convenient when you need to migrate your tricount list from one device to another.
You will only receive notifications when you are logged in to the app. To turn push notifications on or off when logged in, tap on the menu in your tricount list and choose My Settings. Then in Preferences, switch notifications on or off.
It could be that you were not logged in to the app or that the notifications were turned off on your device. Since the notification feature is quite new (released in version 3.0), feel free to contact us (at support@tricount.com) if you believe the notifications are not working properly.
No. To be notified about the activity of participants in your tricounts, you need to be logged in to the app. Please note that you will only be notified about the tricounts that are in your list.
If you sign out from the app, your tricounts will disappear and the list will become empty. This does not mean that your tricounts have been unlinked from your profile or have been deleted: if you sign in again (on this device or on another), all of them will be reimported.
There are two ways to migrate the list of your tricounts from one device to another: 1. automatic - if you are logged in the app, the list of your tricounts is linked to your profile. The login functionality enables you to easily migrate your tricounts from one device to another. 2. manually - if you do not want to sign in, you have to share the unique access-URL of every tricount and access them on the other device to import them.
It is necessary to re-login in the app with your new email address and to re-import all your tricounts manually.
Note that all your tricounts will be removed from your device when you log out. It is therefore necessary to share all active tricounts with yourself (by email for example) in order to be able to re-import them once you’re logged in with the desired email address.
When you are logged in the app, you can activate push-notifications. If you do so, you will be notified every time someone adds, edits or removes a transaction in a tricount present in your list.
Just click the "share" button, and send the link to your tricount via mail (or sms, ...) to all members of your group.
This way, your friends can enter their own expenses and see or modify the expenses you entered.
It's easier for you and your friends to add expenses.
Moreover, it also means creating a backup of your group expenses because sharing requires a copy on our servers. The link you will receive does not have an expiration date! But it's important to keep it.
Just remember that before sharing you need to synchronize your expenses in application.
Yes, it's even better if they do (why would you do all the work?!) Just send them the link to your tricount, and then they can install it in their app, use it online and add, modify or delete any expense.
Well, anyone with the link can access the tricount with full access rights.
This means they can add expenses, but also delete some, etc.
Open the tricount's link on your mobile. On your phone, a page with a specific button enabling you to use your app will open up. If the app is installed, it will load the tricount into it, otherwise you will be redirected to the proper app store to first download the app.
Synchronization is only available on mobile apps.
Syncing will allow all users to see your new expense or modifications, but also to add their own and share them with the group.
For mobile users, it's also a back-up of your data on our servers - very handy if you lose your phone!
Just swipe down to synchronize and refresh the list of your expenses (available only for mobile apps).
Yes, by default it is automatic if there is an internet connection. In case it fails an icon appears next to all expenses that aren't synced (on mobile app).
No, even if you delete some tricounts on your phone, they will remain accessible for any of your friends who have the link (providing that you synchronized and shared your tricount!) But if you delete expenses, then they are effectively deleted from our servers as well.
